"Bringing Transit to the Village"
Projections are that automobile traffic in Princeton will increase 55% by 2020.
This means that our existing non-rail transport will be severely affected several times a day. Why? Because it is limited to a shared public right-of-way that is already overloaded.
For Public Transit to work it must:
- GO where people want to go
- GO when they want to go 24/7
- Have minimal or no wait time
- Be snappy and efficient
- Have reasonable fares and be cost efficient (sustainable)
- Be appealing and attractive to riders
- Be an integral part of a larger whole system - not a patch
- Cover the last mile; serve areas of concentrated demand
- It is possible TODAY to create a 3 dimensional Right of Way (ROW) that is 99% on University and Public lands; only one small piece of property and a few easements are needed to complete the ROW
- This ROW is totally independent and would be fully functional irrespective of gridlock and congestion on public roads
- The ROW is ideal for the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) systems now emerging
What can we do?
- Reserve the ROW NOW and secure the key properties!
- Encourage Princeton University to take a leadership role and solicit donors for the first real world pilot PRT urban installation in the US. Besides serving their transportation needs, this system would offer numerous research opportunities
- Encourage Princeton University to perform a preliminary cost and feasibilty study, so that we will be ready when funding is secured
- Encourage DOT / NJT to enable and support this effort
- Encourage local planners to include the ROW in the master plan now
A Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system would benefit the University, the towns, the region and the world!
